1. Visit this website about 3D shapes – investigate and create three or four 3D shapes and describe them.

2. Visit this page of images of buildings. Print one or two out and label as many different 3D shapes that you can see.

3. Open Kahootz and create an expression using 3D shapes.

Maths in the Commonwealth Games

This week in your library sessions you will be investigating the Commonwealth Games website. Answer these questions in your journal:

1. Go to the MapQuest Atlas website and locate India. Click on it to find out the time and temperature there. Convert the Fahrenheit temperature to Celsius using this website.

2. What number day is it of the Commonwealth Games? What does XIX mean before the Commonwealth Games? Visit this website about Roman Numerals to help you.

3. Visit the main schedule page and name four sports that are happening today.

4. Click on one of the animated sport icons on the home page and write down three mathematical facts about that sport.

5. Go the medals page and record the top 6 countries and the number of medals they have won.

6. Visit the Australia Post Letter Link 2010 site and go to the facts page. For each of the three sections write down 2 - 3 mathematical facts.

7. If you finish, explore the Commonwealth Games Website and/or the Letter Link 2010 website.

New maths website

Free Rice

Have a look at "Free Rice" website - every time you answer a question you earn some rice for people who need food. This is a non-profit website run by the United Nations World Food Program. Keep a tally of the rice you earn and we will add them all together at school.

Web-quest - "Let's go shopping!"

Here is another web-quest about shopping for ingredients to make a recipe you find on the Internet. Follow these steps:

1. Go the website taste.com.au to the kids friendly section. Write out the ingredients in a list and the amount you will need next to each one.

2. The next step is to find out what your postcode is. Go the site, Postcodes Australia, and enter your suburb and then click "Find". Even if you know your postcode, this is worth doing as it gives you some interesting facts about your suburb.

3. Go to Coles Online and enter your postcode in the "New Customers" section - bottom left. On the next page click on the yellow button that has "Start Shopping" on it.

4. Find where your ingredients for your recipe are and note down the cost. If you want the ingredient, click on the "Add" button - you will see it added to your total on the right.

5. Going further - if you have time go with an adult to the supermarket and buy the ingredients for your recipe and make it! Was it cheaper or more expensive than buying online?

To tessellate or not to tessellate...

This week the students in Learning Neighbourhood 2 went out on a shape and tessellating pattern hunt. Here are some patterns we found, do they all tessellate?

Webquest

A Web Quest is an activity that involves students visiting a variety of websites for a particular project. This one is called “Happy Holidays!”.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS WEB QUEST - Learning Agreement Activity

Feel like a holiday? Then have a go at this Web Quest. Record all your information in your learning journal or on a sheet of paper and put this in your black folder.

Step 1

Decide where you want to go for a two week holiday to an overseas country. Visit google maps and find your destination. Name your destination and name some nearby towns, cities or countries. Use the “Satellite” and “Terrain” options. Describe what you see. (Side quest 1: Find out what “terrain” means using dictionary.com).

Step 2

You are going to have find out what the weather is like where you are going so you know what type of clothing to pack (remember the seasons are the opposite in the Northern Hemisphere). Visit Yahoo Weather and record your findings. What clothes will you need to bring? What types of activities might you be doing, i.e. skiing, swimming, etc?

Step 3

You are now going to find out how much it costs to fly to your destination. Visit “Flight Centre” and put in the necessary details. Write down how much the flight is going to cost – remember you need a “return” ticket or you will be stuck overseas!

(Side Quest 2: Go to “How far is it between?” and write down the distance in kilometres, make sure you check it is not set to give the result in miles!)

Step 4

I am going to give you $2000.00 Australian dollars as spending money! Visit the currency converter website and write down the name of the countries' currency and how much you will get.

Step 5

Go to Wikipedia and find out some facts about the country you are going to. Draw a picture of the flag.

Tesselations

Hi everybody,

Today all the children did a workshop about 2D shapes. We looked at the properties of lines including parallel and intersecting lines. After brainstorming a range of common shapes we began to look at their properties. We then looked at manipulating shapes, sliding, flipping and turning. This in turn helped us understand tessellating patterns. Here is a slideshow of the images we discussed and a few more!

The first is Spelling City. I will show you how to use this site and you will be putting in your own spelling list.

The second site is Tutpup, a great site especially for practicing your times table. Ask your parents if they can sign you up and get your personal username and password.
